  • Re: Leek Moth

Forum post by LovelyHelen on 21 Sep 2009

It seems I may have given up too early but I dug mine up yesterday and burnt them as they had been reduced to a pulp and all the top growth looked pretty sad. I didn't really know about it as a pest but the local garden centre said that it had been reported as a problem to them in previous years - it seems that it has reached Bristol with a vengeance. Oh well I'll just have to buy lots of enviromesh next year! Read more..

  • Massively tall poataoes

Forum post by LovelyHelen on 26 Jun 2009

Just wondered if anyone might be around who could advise on this one.... Hi all Hope you can shed some light on this one for me. I have some International Kidney earlies in planter bags which have gone mad! They are now about 5 foot tall and needing canes to support them! These ones are growing in Birmingham where I lodge during the week and are in a slightly shady back garden which made me wonder whether they were searching for more light but there is now more sun there and they are still getting Read more..

I think that I heard something about this on the radio yesterday. They had recorded people speaking - male and female and different readings. Apparently the plants all had a different voice piped to them and were all treated exactly the same otherwise. The voice which led to the biggest growth in a plant was Sarah Darwin (Darwin's great great grandaughter) reading a passage from 'The Voyage of the Beagle'. However they did say that there wasn't really enough data to make it completely Read more..

My lettuce and many other plants are absolutely infested - don't know if it's worse than other years as this is my first major year of growing. I've splashed out and bought some mail order ladybirds which are now rampaging around stuffing their faces! Read more..

Trust me my workmates have been laughing a lot about the mail order ladybirds! I've been getting slug nematodes from the Green Gardener site and I noticed they had ladybirds for sale. It's not the cheap option but I figured that they would hopefully build up over the years. You can get adult ladybirds or ladybird larvae. The ladybird larvae I got were very small so I think may not have lasted through the rain which happened on the night I released them - there were a few men down the next Read more..

  • Re: Anyone else had poor bean germination?

Forum post by LovelyHelen on 09 Jun 2009

My Cobra beans have germinated well but I think they are further behind than beans that I've had in previous years, they have no flowers as yet and haven't reached the top of the canes. Read more..

I'm trying the carrot seeds on a tape this year which has been suggested helps with germination as the tape protects them from being pushed too far down by rain. However I have had better germination with the free sown Paris Market globe carrots! The plus point of the tape has been that the carrots are nicely spaced meaning I don't have to thin so much. • Re: So what do you do?

Forum post by LovelyHelen on 30 Apr 2009

Thank goodnes I read this - I've just realised I still have a house plant outside ( at 9.45 pm) - I'm off to rescue it now - hopefully it will be lovely and fresh if a little chilly! In answer to the original question I do the housework as when it's raining is the only time it'll get done! Read more..

  • Re: where are comments on two big gardening issues?

Forum post by LovelyHelen on 08 Apr 2009

I enjoyed it as I am a beginner but my mum found it a little bit basic. I agree that they are splashing the cash but my understanding is that the hard landscaping is to create areas more akin to our smaller gardens with problem bits such as shady walled areas etc which they will then show us how to deal with. I think they are aiming to make it more diverse and applicable to home gardeners but they have to construct it first. However I would give my eye teeth for that greenhouse! I am very much looking Read more..

Having now seen all the coverage and watched Fri's proghramme I can understand why it started later - they wouldn't have been ready to show off the new garden until last week! It looks exciting though. Read more..
