We spent Saturday making Courgette Glutney. Need to let it mature for a few weeks, so can't give a verdict yet. Courgette glutney This lovely pickle is a fantastic way to use various summer veg gluts, and overgrown courgettes are one of my favourites. You can alter the recipe according to what you have, and chop and change the spices to suit your taste, too. Makes about 10 jars. 1kg courgettes, unpeeled if small, peeled if huge, cut into 1cm dice (or use pumpkin later in the season) 1kg red or Read more..

Hi Did anyone have any success drying tomatoes last year, especially using an oven ? I have a warming drawer in my refitted kitchen, and think that this could be a good way to dry them. Anyone tried this? Thanks, Lloyd Read more..

Thanks all for your comments. Miranda, I'm growing Gladiator. This is only my second year with Parsnips, so have no experience of which are good or bad varieties. These have produced a lot of leaf growth, so I was really pleased to see that the root was of a decent size - I had expected all top and no bottom. Read more..

  • Parsnips

Forum post by Lloyd on 27 Jul 2009

Pulled my first parsnip of the year yesterday. I know it is early, but they are a good size. However we were very disappointed by the (complete lack of ) flavour when roasted. I'd heard that parsnips need a frost to enhance the flavour, but had always assumed that they would be ok without the frost. Would anyone like to comment ? Thanks Lloyd Read more..

As this thread is getting a bit long, I'll repeat a link to a site that I mentioned last year. This site has lots of information, and experiences of affected gardeners last year and this. There are also updates on how ground that was affected last year (2008) is now, and a map showing locations of known problem sites. http://www.glallotments.btik.com/p_Contaminated_Manure.ikml Read more..

Or have an isolation valve inside, which is opened when the outside tap needs to be used, and closed at the end of the day. Probably helps with frost protection as well. Lloyd Read more..

Nova, a year on, and we've almost forgotten we had a problem. But there are reasons for that. In the new greenhouse, we've completely ignored the borders, and are using growbags. I still come across the odd bit of recognisble manure, and whilst that is happening, I'm not going to risk replanting. Outside, we were quite fortunate that we had not manured the whole patch that we now have. Last year we left the contaminated ground bare, and I made sure I dug in over frequently. I used the Read more..
