If you're worried about using Jeyes fluid, then perhaps you may consider sodium metabisulphite solution. I sterilise the greehouse border with it. The sulphur is the killer, and it degrades very quickly in the soil after sterilisation. It is often added in extremely dilute form as a food and wine preservative, and those who make their own beer or wine will be well acquainted with it. The fumes which come off it are a little unpleasant, however. Read more..

  • Re: When to plant fruit trees?

Forum post by headfullofbees on 24 Oct 2009

If bare-rooted, plant when dormant, November-March, but not when frosty or ground is waterlogged. If potted, then you can usually get away with planting at any time, but November-March is still usually best. A third of trees die in their first year due to insufficient watering. Not related to your question, I know, but thought it worth passing on. Hope this helps. Welcome. Read more..

Forum post by headfullofbees on 19 Oct 2009

I dry out my depleted tomato/potato compost and use it store dahlia tubers etc, over winter, however, because of disease susceptibility, I don't re-use compost used for tomatoes or potatoes to grow anything else, as I recycle all my compost and might forget that it had previously been used for those two. Forum post by headfullofbees on 18 Aug 2009

When growing in pots, it is very easy to sluice all the nutrients out of the growing medium. Tomato FEED is classed as a low-level fertiliser, as it has lower levels of NPK. Should be OK as long as it's no stronger than half-strength. Read more..

Send you half-hundredweight of courgettes each if the carriage wasn't so expensive. Seaweed has little in it of nutritional value to plants, it may add a little in the way of trace elements, and be a decent mulch, but you need more water, more nitrogen, and, most of all, more potassium. Water twice a day if they're in pots, morning with half-strength tomato feed, evening with water. I grow courgettes in tubs, and try never to let the surface completely dry out. richardpeeej: it sounds very Read more..
