Hallo everyone Thanks for all the advice on gardening and slugs. Its going to be an interesting year. I'm going to encourage the birds a bit more - at the moment all we get is pigeons. We have a lovely tree in the garden, planted when my eldest daughter was 1 to give us a bit of shade. She is now 36 and the tree fruits millions of little berries in the summer. the pigeons love them. They eat so much they fall off the branches and have to flap really hard to get back on the tree. But they don't eat Read more..

Hello Miranda Thanks for the advice. I'll do that. I've just been looking at your idle chat and your website. Gardeners do all sorts of things! I live in North West London, work as a school librarian and have a smallish garden(about 70 ft) west facing, we have a terrace at the back with lots of pots and then the garden is about 18 inches lower. It was the terrace that got me out into the garden, 'cause before we had it built you came straight out the kitchen door into overgrown plants and weeds. Read more..

That explains it. For years we've been getting these brown marks. We never quite replaced the washing machine, tho' we did think of it. Thanks for the info. Lorac Read more..

As a working mother with aged parents 3 hours drive away I never had much time for gardening and my husband lost his initial enthusiasm. Now years later with the children off my hands, a retired house husband, and Mum and Dad gone - I have time. I looked out at the thicket and slug farm that was once a garden and thought ah ha. Last Autumn I cleared a bed at the end of the garden (a fairly sunny area), dug in fertilizer, planted up and it didn't look bad this summer. haven't quite cured the slug Read more..

  • Re: Slug/snail Nematodes - do they work?

Forum post by Lorac on 27 Nov 2005

This has been my first full year of gardening although we've had the garden for years.I've just joined RHS and slugs are a real problem in our garden. I really tried to get rid of all the slugs and snails this year. Cleared lots of rubbish and debris, put agg shells round new plants, slug pubs, and 3 lots of nematodes. The nematodes seemed to be working, but the egg shells didn't. Then we went to visit my daughter in Australia in August. When we got back we were picking up about 60 slugs per night Read more..

Hi Carro-online I like the user name, I'm really Carol, but there's lots of them already. Thanks for the tips about bird feeding. I'm still debating about the pond, where to put it and how big etc, but will be feeding birds this winter. About 5 minutes walk from us there is an area known to the local kids as the "birdie" short for bird sanctuary. I don't know if it reaaly is, but it's fenced off all round and is a small area of woodland and has been home to urban foxes. Lorac Read more..
