Gardener's World Presenter Monty Don has called for a change in the law over hose-pipe bans. He says he wants viewers to demand a change in legislation to make the law consistent for different types of water use. He says "[i] The 1991 Water Act is absurd- it restricts the use of hosepipes for gardens and for washing cars, but it allows for people to fill their swimming pool. We're not allowed to water-in plants, including vegetables to feed our families, but the Act allows us to wash down a

Hello Rainmaker, Welcome to the BB Board. You will soon get to know our happy band of Gardening friends.Just to keep you in the picture I am one of the 'older' ones with just a small 'patch' of garden---just large enough for me now. I have a postage stamp size vegetable patch but manage to cultivate enough for two of us and any spare to my good neighbour. I grow quite a selection of Acers (in containers)/ Roses and Fuchias. Other plants are more or less 'fill-ins'. Last year some of us 'posted' a

Many thanks for your kind wishes Sue & Miranda. If I am perfectly honest I wish that years ago there wasn't 'that stigma' of living together.I would have waited many years before 'tying' the knot!. I think it is a good idea--not to 'rush into marriage because it is the done thing' keeps the OH on their toes knowing that there isn't a piece of paper and a ring binding you together, and as you say Miranda , yes, there is commitment. I am with you both all the way. We have had many ups and downs over

Hi, Blinky-- Oh not leylandi- Yes it is a fast growing hedge, so fast it gets out of control. You will regret planting it . It causes so many problems, apart from the cultivation of other plants around and under it-- it can cause problems in the future when it grows so high (A law has come into force that says it must be kept to a maximum height of 6ft.) It takes alot of time and hard work to keep it under control. I would suggest a Beech hedge. Here's hoping you change your mind!

So pleased you are not badly hurt, "take more water with it next time"!! Many thanks for explaining the 'trough' method for peas, I will give it a go and let you know how I get on. I will be going to our local D I Y corner shop for the trough, about 6-7ft long so it will fit in the greenhouse (which is 8ft length) perhaps I'll get two of them -- I haven't been on the Board lately because I was away with OH celebrating our 54th Wedding Anniversary (I was a teenage bride!!!) and both our parents said

Hi, Miranda, Our council charge the same price as yours £3 bag. It didnt smell was dark and crumbly but after 'seeing' the rubbish people put in their Green Waste Wheely Bin I have stopped getting it (about 2 years ago) I make all my own compost now and sometimes mix in the occasional bag of 'Organic' compost sold at Garden Centres-- quite an expensive way- but not often. It is only when I am Re-Potting larger container plants and need that 'extra' oomph! for the plant!! I wonder if we have the same

Hi, Jak Many thanks for your reply. Yes Charger was 13 but in a very frail condition towards the end, I hadn't the heart to have her 'put to sleep' maybe I should have done to save her suffering the indignity of being a 'strong' dog to being 'frail'. We have had two days of lovely sunshine and warm weather-- But rain has started and the forcast is for it to continue for the next few days. Did quite a bit in the garden- my bones are creaking now!!!! Digger I would be pleased if you could describe

We also had a lovely sunny, warm day. It was a pleasure working in the garden. The daffodils are in flower also Hyacinths. The snowdrops have been out for a while now.I have sown some Hardy Annuals in the borders-Managed to do some hand weeding.Found those 'dreaded 'Vine Weevils in a container with Miniture Roses. I didnt think they would go for them, but because they were looking a bit 'sickly' I thought I would investigate and there they were.I haven't been able to save the Roses, the roots were

Sue- They are beautiful You will be sorry to part with them.I once had a Bull Mastiff called 'Charger' she had three babies but unfortunately they all died because she 'Rolled' on top of them when they were being born and before she could get any attention from the Vet. Charger survived until she was 13years old. They are faithful companions-- It has been horrible weather today--Rain,quite heavy, and cold aswell. I have managed to get some seeds sown in the Greenhouse. I have also 'treated' the standard
