I had another thought - Exochorda macrantha 'The Bride'? At least it's a shrub on it's own roots! Chiltern Seeds have E. racemosa seeds available online which is similar and might do?

How about the Wedding Cake Tree - Cornus contraversa Variegata? The only problem is that I think they are grafted. Perhaps you could get some very young ones from a propagating nursery.

Did you want climbers/ramblers 'cos rosa rugosa isn't and it also suckers which makes it very good for a hedge but would be a bit un-disciplined for a pergola. You'll have to train your Mum!

They should be fine provided the roots can spread under the drive and other ways. Put some of the 'good stuff' in the soil when you plant to get them started. The apples will get a bit too shaded in time I would guess, but I can't be sure without seeing the site.

Cotoneaster Cornubia should certainly be evergreen in sheltered parts of N. Devon as long as you're not at Westwrd Ho! or Hartland!!! Have you located mature specimens? Lizbeth
