• physalis?

Forum post by anthemis on 27 Aug 2006

A neighbour has just shown me some seed heads he has been given... some were easy to identify but one had not been given a name by the donor. It looks like a cape gooseberry with a crisp outer to a berry but apparently the flowers were blue and I can't find any reference to a blue physalis. Are there any other flowers with a similar type of seed head? Read more..

There's a lot of selective growth going on... ie the weeds are growing twice as fast as anything else! Even with all the rain OH managed to dash out and cut the grass on Saturday. We were really lucky a week ago because we were having a little charity plant sale in the garden and the weather held off for us, it would have been rained off if it had been this week. Read more..

Digger, I don't have any love for the water companies and agree it is a pity that we have no way of redistributing the rainwater from areas like yours which has so much rain to the overcrowded south east which is an area of exceptionally low rainfall. In the short term I feel we will have to cope with the shortages here.. It is a fact that the water table is way down on its normal levels. The RHS says that as a business they are not affected by the hosepipe ban but are setting a lead by not using Read more..

  • Water at chelsea

Forum post by anthemis on 21 May 2006

I'm puzzled by the fact that the RHS is restricting the use of hosepipes at Chelsea but has drilled a borehole. The waterboards have stated that the problem is not merely with the reservoirs but with the level in the aquifers below ground so why does it make a difference if the RHS takes the water directly from below ground? I thought it was usually considered a good idea to give new fences a coat of preservative as the treatment as sold is not usually that good and it's often quite easy to get at the fence when its just gone up. Mr Don is not one of the gardeners that inspires us in our house so I am with your OH in that! Read more..

But if neither of you were very keen either when you 'd done a bit why do more? Don't risk a mighty marital row over a fence!!! I must admit that in spite of the TV programmes I prefer to see wood in wood colours but its a personal choice. You can get the fence preservatives in brown shades. Ideally the fence would be hidden by plants! Read more..
