It's Ann Wareham of Vedw Gardens - http://www.veddw.co.uk/anne/dt1.html - there are other articles on this site - fairly caustic ones about gardens opening under the yellow book - that such gardens should be open to critisism, but you tend not to because they collect money for charity - she is part of a group called ThinkinGardens - http://www.thinkingardens.co.uk/index.html - have a look - I wrote a bit on my website where I said 'Was I missing the point?' and I described the as the new elistism Read more..

  • Peat and its sustainability

Forum post by williamelfyn on 02 Nov 2005

I am always disappointed and irritated with Peter Seabrooks'' attitude towards peat and this arose yet again during the discussion on ''Gardening as a threat to the natural world''. To quote ''Peter Seabrook condemned the moves against using peat, singling out the National Trust, and insisting ''peat is a perfect renewable source''. No one really seems to point out the faults in his arguments. Peat bogs are, yes, just as Peter suggests in a recent article in the ''Garden'' a very simple ecosystem Read more..

The yellowing is more than likely magnesium deficiency, if mottled could be a virus, but I suspect the former especially if your soil is alkaline. Yellowing can frequently occur even in acidic soils and can be corrected with magnesium lime (Magnesium carbonate). Sequestrine could be a safer bet for you; this is a chelating agent which overcomes the problems of alkalinity. Try potting up in ericaeceous compost, watering with rain water and treating with sequestrine monthly. Don't expect the leaves Read more..

Forum post by williamelfyn on 23 Nov 2004

One factor that perhaps makes the bulletin board rather 'dull' if that is the right word - certainly there is a lack of activity compared to 'Oasis' bulletin board - just look at this to see the postings - is that it is difficult to find on the RHS web site - it is not easy to find - try and put bulletin board into the search facility and it does not appear on the first page!, try discussion group and it is nowhere to be seen - perhaps the webmaster should use Atomz and update it when new material Read more..

Prune Ceanothus too hard and it will die - I tend to remove dead/dying branches - no more. All the Ceanothus' I have cut back hard eventually die. Better to grub out and buy a new one . Sorry! WilliamElfyn Read more..

  • Navigation on RHS web site

Forum post by williamelfyn on 12 Feb 2004

Whilst the navigation and content on the RHS site is excellent, could one make a suggestion to make it even easier to use? To go back to the home page is confusing - yes, you put a link at the bottom of every page to go home, but not every one scrolls down to the bottom of the page - it would be an easy matter to include home on the left menu bar or/and on the menu bar at the top. PLEASE. Thanks. WilliamElfyn Read more..
