LOL - only 944 to go for me before I hit that mark! If I spend a weekend posting recipes I could make it by Monday! Richard, the second harvest of mushrooms is for you, the first one has already been gobbled up last night. My next door neighbour came round and I made some terriyaki mushrooms, grilled some for a big omelet and made a mushroomroom pesto (garlic, walnuts, parsley, shallot, oil). All yummy and they do have a lot more taste than the sweaty, rubbery ones you get in those plastic containers Read more..

  • Ossobuco - classic italian beef stew

Forum post by EvaInNL on 21 Nov 2009

This is such an easy and cheap recipe, you can't mess it up and it always a big hit with my friends. It's really an old Italian peasant dish and should officially be served with a classic risotto, but I think it's best with some crusty white bread and a simple salad. A italian barolo type wine goes well with this. If you manage to have leftovers, then take the meat off the bone, put it back into the sauce and serve it over pasta the next day. Classic Ossobuco Serves: 4 to 6 people Prep Read more..

Oh dear, I hope everyone's ok, especially you Roundelder, you must be smack in the middle of it all! I've seen some of the pics on the bbc news page, it looks just horrible... We're set to get some heavy rain as well over the weekend, but nothing as bad as you're seeing in the UK. Not sure if this will cheer anyone up but my mushrooms are growing like mad, in 4 days it went from hardly anything to a full harvest for dinner tonight! Read more..

So I finally get to meet the infamous Digger! Hello there, glad to hear you're on the mend! Your being back seems to have cheered everyone up like a ray of sunshine! Hopefully you'll have the same effect on the weather Digger... BB and Miranda asked for the shiitake pics, I tried to copy 2 into my previous post but it didn't work, so here's the link to my webpage again: http://evavooijs.spaces.live.com/ --> Photos --> The Mushroom Lab, day 1 and day 5. I don't think I'll Read more..

Your kitchen must smell really nice Sue! Glad to see you back BB and congrats on the top poster title! How's the OH doing? Glad your rabbit's on the mend Richard! We're just going through the worst of the storm right now, winds of up to 100 km/h, but it's dry and it should die down soon. To my amazement there are some guys from the council choosing today to cut down some of the branches of the big trees in the parking lot downstairs. Brave lads indeed... By the way I took some pics Read more..

Hi Bill, Miranda is right, be careful when putting vegetables/herbs into oil and just leaving them to steep, it's quite dangerous. It's mainly veg/herbs with a low acidity (PH) that are prone to botulism, it can be as quick as within a week! Besides chilis, garlic is another dangerous one and rosemary... I would stongly advise you to throw out your current batch and start again with the recipe that Miranda provided. There are loads of recipes out there, but the trick is to use only those Read more..

Hmm, only 22 years to go till I can sleep in till 9 am as well Richard, can't wait! Luckily I've not got it as bad as poor Rogerbee though, I get up at 7 am and can work in my pj's if I want to (so you don't get the wrong impression: I work from home 4 days a week ). Anyway, the sun is out and it's really nice outside, might go for a walk in a little while, it'd be a shame to stay in! Cheerio! Read more..

Good morning all! I bought something at the food fair yesterday: a grow-your-own shiitake stump! It's a strange looking thing but I couldn't resist it! It comes in a sort of growing bag which you leave on till the first buttons appear on the stump, then you take it out and the only looking after it needs is a bit of spraying with water to keep things growing. In about 2 to 3 weeks you can start harvesting your first mushrooms and they say you can get 3 to 4 new harvests off it. Not bad for Read more..

Hi Caxton, the pressure washer and wire mesh are very good suggestions indeed! Before you put the wire mesh on you can also soak an old cloth with distilled white vinegar and rub the boards with that. It will help prevent new moss/algae from growing. Plus it's a cheap and environmenatlly friendly solution. Read more..
