    I tend to find that shrubs which get very thickly woody can stop flowering and behaving, as well as being hard to manage and prune. If you need to prune it to get it out of the way of a gate, and clear a border I might be inclined to take semi-ripe cuttings (usually done summer - late summer in case you're not sure) and if these are successful to then replant those when they have put on a good bit of growth and rootball, say in a long tom pot.     I wonder how old your seeds are? If too old they may not germinate. I sowed aquilegia seed around this time of year once before in a seed tray, but from a bought seed packet. Why not just plant them and see? You won't have lost anything! If they grow, they should be ready to plant out in the garden by September or so this year, and then they'll flower next May. Read more..
