Forum post by GardeningFin on 07 Nov 2009

Hi, Thanks for your comments, I've carefully been looking at the book (RHS gardening encylopedia) which suggests that in very cold areas or on heavy soils to delay planting until Spring or plant cloves in modules over winter in a sheltered position outdoors to provide the necessary cold period. I impatiently glossed over that and jumped straight to planting in modules following the accompanying pictures in the book where I could have just planted them directly! That said, I now have planted the Read more..

Forum post by GardeningFin on 07 Nov 2009

Hi Paul, I hope this is of some help: 1. Does it have to be in the ground, or can it be in a pot? It will be fine in a pot. Put in a pot large enough to allow the sunflower to grow to full size. You'll need a strong cane to support it as it gains height. 2. What type of potting soil would be best--potting, garden, or....? We live in the desert region of southern California (USA). Sunflowers are tolerant to lots of soil types. A well-draining garden compost should be fine. 3. what type of watering Read more..

I'm not really sure why the book suggests putting them in modules first. They seems very happy and have ALL sprouted. I'm going to give them a few days of hardening off and then transplant them directly into the ground. Thanks for your replies! Fin Read more..

Hi there, I'm really milking the forum today! Thanks to Silver Surfer who helped my ID my Kalanchoe blossfeldiana I've had this plant for years and it only blossomed with white flowers about 6 years ago! Reading up on it, it should give a lovely display every year - long into winter. I only get green leaves and it is a healthy fella in a sunny, warm spot so not sure why it doesn't flower. Would anyone have any ideas? Many thanks Fin Read more..

  • Garlic

Forum post by GardeningFin on 25 Oct 2009

Hi there, I've planted some garlic cloves in modules of compost following the guidance from a book I have. I'm not quite sure what to do now - the book has left me hanging.. Should I just leave then cloves in their modules over winter in a coldframe and plant them out in Spring when their bud appear above ground? Should they be watered whilst dormant over winter or least keep the soil moist? Thanks Fin Read more..

Thanks for the identifications! I've been meaning to follow up on them for ages and it bugs me everyday when I see them and don't know their names :-) My neighbour was talking about the Hebe today and I just nodded not knowing what he was talking about - glad I now know what it is. Forum post by GardeningFin on 11 Oct 2009

Hi there, I have a grow bag I used for my tomatoes this season which are now finished and don't want to throw the grow bag/compost away. Can I still use it for growing something else in - I've got broadbeans and spinach which I'd like to plant in them. Is this a bad idea? Kind regards Fin Read more..
