  • Re: Stone cleaner

Forum post by SallyH on 22 Sep 2009

Thanks for the advice - I tried scrubbing with hot soapy water (and a lot of elbow grease!) yesterday and it has made a big improvement on the bird bath. Still some stubborn blackish spots, but I will keep at it! Read more..

  • Black spots on lavender leaves

Forum post by SallyH on 10 Sep 2009

I have a few large lavender bushes. Last year I cut them back almost to the old wood and they really flourished this year. I have started to do the same this year, but I can see that most of the leaves which have now been revealed are covered with little black splodges, each one like a black ring with a paler centre. Should I be worried about this? What is it and how should I treat it? Any advice gratefully received! Thank you. Read more..

  • Stone cleaner

Forum post by SallyH on 10 Sep 2009

I bought some Nano stone cleaner by mail order to clean various stone ornaments in my garden, but having read the instructions, I am now worried that it may be dangerous to birds and wildlife generally. (It says Do Not Use on fish ponds and Do not let it get into drains). Does anyone have any exeperience of this product? I was hoping to use it in a couple of bird baths and various other little statues. Read more..

Thanks Miranda, that's very useful. The amazing thing was how quickly the little larvae devoured all the leaves. I will be on the lookout for them in future! Read more..

  • Berberis demolished overnight by caterpillars

Forum post by SallyH on 05 Sep 2009

My berberis (thunbergii atropurpurea Nana?), about 3 feet tall, has been demolished practically overnight and is now covered with these little caterpillars. There is barely a leaf left. Can anyone identify the caterpillars? And what should I do now to my berberis? Thanks! Read more..

  • Please can anyone identify this and how can I rescue it?

Forum post by SallyH on 25 Aug 2009

I inherited this palm. It was quite high (about 4-5 feet) and has been planted quite close to a small conservatory. It was fine the first year I had it. I just cut off the browning outer fronds at the base and it grew more from the inside. However this spring/summer, all the new fronds started to turn brown at the centre of the plant. In desperation, I cut them all off low down, thinking that I would have to dig the whole thing up. However, it now seems to be recovering and the fronds are now growing Read more..

  • Silver Birch dying?

Forum post by SallyH on 13 Jun 2009

I inherited a small garden with three medium sized silver birch trees about 20-30 feet tall, about 10 feet apart. Two of them seem fine, but the third looks as if it is dying. The trunk looks much the same as the other two but the leaves have all turned purplish brown and are beginning to drop off. I have just removed some ivy from the lower 8 feet of the trunk - could this have caused the problem? Also the one which is dying is in the corner of the garden, quite close to a fence with a fairly large Read more..
