Really sorry to hear about Richard, Digger. You can know that it is the right time for him, but it doesn't stop you missing him. I've been "listening in" for the past few days, but no time to post. I'm always in late from work on Mondays and Tuesdays, then we are off to Sidmouth festival tomorrow, so are busy packing all the camping gear. Now we have to take the electric wheelchair for my daughter as well as a manual we will have to take two cars this year. So, that gives us

And you are very good at putting links into your mails, Richardpeeej! Your posting made me realise that I had just started talking on this well established idle chat thread as well. I was glad to see your replies and hope they apply to me as well!

On the subject of poor seed germination, I have just received the Plant Worldseeds catalogue. There was an Sunday Telegraph offer - you send them 4 first class stamps and they send their 2009 catalogue with a packet of Helleborus "Oriental Beauties" seed. Anyway, inside the front cover it says "Probably the world's only catalogue selling this year's fresh seeds!" So, those of you who were speculating that you got better germination from saved seed, because it was fresher

Escallonia, probably "Apple Blossom". It responds fairly well to pruning, so you might be able to tidy it up if others don't like it. Cut out up to a third of the older wood back fairly hard, then do it again in a year's time, etc. Alternatively, what about growing something else through it to give a bit more colour? You could grow a Clematis vitticella, which is fairly vigorous (but not rampant like C montana. There are a number of varieties in shades of white, pink and purple

On a thread about cacti it has been asked whether Bigboy is my OH. I don't think so as I don't think that's how my OH would describe himself

"if anyone would like a cutting/plant will happily post you all one" That reminds me of a comment about a particularly rampant plant, sold by Chiltern Nurseries (I think). It was on the lines of "if you want one of these I'll grow it to you!"

Thanks Silversurfer. Sorry about the delay in replying; somehow the emailing bit got redisabled. I haven't found out how to paste a real link in yet, so thanks for creating it. My acanthus is even more prickly than that. Sorry about the poor pictures. OH has my camera, so I had to use my phone. No flowers this year; I suspect it doesn't like being in a pot, but I'm undecided whether to allow it garden space.

"neighbours national collection" Love it! I found my neighbour putting in a supports for "this lovely little climber" that he had found on the boundary! Interestingly, I remember hearing a letter from someone on Gardeners Question time. She lived in Iceland and said that she tried really hard to get our white convulvulus to grow in her garden, but without success. A good case of weeds are only plants in the wrong places. The morning glory that I planted last year has self sown
