As Phots-moll and Susiq are sowing more I'll give them another go too. In my ignorance I thought they would go on all summer! I have pods on the mangetout now,no caterpillars but some leafminer damage. The mangetout look very healthy unlike the sugarsnaps one of which is looking decidedly yellow and sick.

Mine were small too when I ate them 'cos I just couldn't wait any longer! I have flowers (white) on the mangetout from Tuesday so they shouldn't be long. Do you have to weigh them from each plant for the trial or can you just state how many meals from the whole bunch because I can't see how I'm going to remember how much from each plant. The sugarsnaps are I have to say divine and I will grow them again.

I noticed pods on the sugarsnaps on Friday so I should be picking them at last but still have no flowers on the mangetout.Shows what a difference location makes I think but also I feel they would have been better in larger pots or open ground.Still I'm happy with what I've got.

At long last I have buds on the sugarsnap - I know this because I've just got back from the garden centre and found a wood pigeon pecking away at them. Yes I really did mean to buy that net but as mine are so far behind I thought I had plenty of time.I have put some chickenwire over them and hope its not too late.No sign of the mangetout.

Alas I spoke too soon and have noticed a bit of nibbling on a couple certainly slugs and have had to put organic pellets down. I am dissapointed with the rate of germination and can only put it down to the cold.

The sugarsnaps are certainly ahead in my troughs and more have germinated up to now, and I put the same number in each trough.I've just been out in the siling rain (bless the British summer) and up to now none have beem eaten by slugs.I put grit on as a top dressing so possibly this has put them off.

Hurray at last .I went away for the weekend and while my back was turned peas have appeared!!! Well as the saying goes a watched pot never boils! Both are peeking through though there are more sugarsnap up to now. I will be taking all of your advice and keep them well watered. Also I have wood pigeons and doves nesting in my trees so I will do as you all seem to do and net them.Ah, happy days and happy gardening to all.

I'm still patiently waiting for my peas in troughs sown on 25th April to come through. Think I'll sow more in pots as an insurance policy and perhaps in a different site.

No sign of my peas yet sown on 25th April but I'm encouraged that sowing in boxes and troughes seems ok, so I'll look forward to seeing my results.
