It started raining here about 2pm too Richard, but I managed to get over to the allotment about midday to get some bits and pieces done. So, another 3 heads of celery dug up, the onions are starting to come through quite well, the broad beans have finally put their heads above ground - suddenly 3-4 cms, when a week ago they were just about showing. Peas are coming along well too so although they probably won't need it, I've put some netting in place for them to climb up - if nothing else

What a life of luxury you lead Richard now you are no longer working . I'm up at 5am five days a week and a lay-in at the weekends is never past 8:30 am. Mind you I usually hit the sack by 10:30 each night, except last night when it was only just gone half past 9 and I was asleep in the chair so gave in and headed for bed.

Morning all, It's been very wet here since about 6 pm last night but although it stopped raining about an hour ago the ground's too wet to do anything. Mind you, I've moved all the pots from outside into the greenhouse for some protection from the strong winds they are forecasting for later on today - so I can't get in there very easily to do much either. So a bit like you Eva, I reckon the gardening books are coming out to do a bit of studying today.

Peony tubers don't like being too deep. I would plant them so they are no more than 1" below the surface. Most of mine you can see the top of the tubers and they came to no harm last winter.

Morning all, We had quite a few fireworks going off round us last night. I think the reason fireworks sometimes seem to start a while before Guy Fawkes night is to do with when the Hindu festival of Diwali falls (they like their fireworks as it is their new year the next day). This year it was 18, 19th October so quite a time between. Next year it is 6, 7 November so it will seem the fireworks are going on forever. Like your idea of celery soup BB, I've planted far too much to munch my way through

Sue, I moved the greenhouse a little while ago and put it directly in front of my garden shed. This means that one long edge of the GH is on the front of the concrete base I put in for the shed to sit on, the other long edge is on an old concrete clothes post that I have sunk in the ground. This means that I have to step over the door sill when I go in or out of it as the bottom of the door frame is about 6inches in the air. A set of old paving slabs run down the middle for me to walk on and the

Glad I've got it done and out the way, Richard. A bit like you with your attic no doubt.

Sounds like quite a job and not one you want to be doing in the wet, even if you are at the top of a hill. I've not got a base to my greenhouse, just the odd well placed brick in the soil to stop the legs of the staging sinking. I then grow my tomatoes in the soil each year but ensure I dig out the top 8 - 12 inches every spring and top it up with home-made compost and the contents of at least one grow bag. What I dig out then goes on the garden to act as a soil improver, and boy does it need

I agree with all the initiatives that have already been suggested on this subject. One I would add, is to keep contacting your local council every 6 months or so to find out where you are on the waiting list and what they are doing to alleviate the problem. You never know, they might just do something about it, if only to get some peace and quiet. Council meetings are also open to the public so if you could find out how to attend and raise a question - it then has to be minuted and acted upon.

Hi all, Yes it is definitely this weekend the clocks go back. The thought of an extra hour's sleep sounds good at the moment but I never seem to manage it. I'll probably end up staying in bed an extra half-hour and then using the other half-hour to do some gardening or other bits and pieces. Good to hear the your mam's back home Susiq and that your OH is making progress BB. Good luck with finding a new wagon Digger - your new avatar is very appropriate for your alias. Got my gutters cleared
