Forum post by gilly_gherkin on 28 Aug 2012

Thank you JB - I'm happy as long as we haven't 'killed' it - but I am very hopeful on that score and as it probably won't flower for a year or so again, I can live with that!! Read more..

  • Overgrown mature Clematis (Montana)

Forum post by gilly_gherkin on 24 Jul 2012

We have just had new fencing put up and the very mature, but lovely clematis Montana which had been trained to grow up over the old fencing, now needs to be cut back drastically, as we do want to keep it and re-train i against the new fencing. However, it ihas a very thick woody stem (6-7" diameter approx) and would like advice on how much to cut it down I have already just cut it down a lot to free it from the wire mesh netting the previous owners had put up..thanks for any good advice!! • Growing raspberries

Forum post by gilly_gherkin on 19 Oct 2011

I'm thinking of putting in some raspberry canes, but need to know if raspberries need a lot of watering and if so, is this daily? Also, I have raised beds and will need to build a fruit cage, so can anyone tell me how high the cage should be? Thanks for any advice. Read more..

  • Re: Ornamental cherry - no blossom!

Forum post by gilly_gherkin on 16 May 2010

Thanks for your reply Boggy - However, the tree must have been planted several years ago I believe, we have had the house for seven years now. I will bear in mind what you say and at least I will give it a really good pruning first, so giving it another chance for next year to flower. Failing that working then maybe it has developed a root disease. We do need to replace the old fencing behind it this year anyway, so that may give me a chance to inspect what is happening lower down! Read more..

  • Ornamental cherry - no blossom!

Forum post by gilly_gherkin on 14 May 2010

For the third year running our cherry tree has refused to bear blossom. It was affected severely by a late frost in 2008, but is definitely not dead and does have leaves - although not as many as it really should have. Can anyone advise what might be the problem and what, if anything I can do? I have periodically fed it with a liquid organic seaweed feed, so have tried to help it. It has always flowered before, so am baffled. Read more..
