  • Re: Lavender augustifolia , white - bareroot?

Forum post by rooibosT42 on 18 Feb 2013

Thank you everyone. I'm going to buy the seeds as you suggest but also buy a couple of plants and take cuttings. I did actually manage to find young plants on Ebay from a couple of sources and in the volumes needed, for March delivery, however seeds/cuttings are more fun, I get to do the propagation! Does anyone know if it's possible to buy these barerooted? I'm making a hedge for someone who'd like this but she can't afford 30 plus of potted ones! Thank you for any info/guidance on this! Sarah Read more..

Hi, thanks for your response. It all depends on what one wants to do in the longer term doesn't it. I've done the split fingernails, half a ton of soil under fingernails and clothes that won't come clean! I can't be a gardener, at the level I'd like to, as I get older (I'm not far off pensionable age!) but I've taught geography and a few other subjects to adults and would like to teach, or examine, or all, in horticulture. I do know lots, but have lots more to learn. I'm Read more..

That's very interesting, that you all passed the exams. It makes me wonder about the importance of the trainer's teaching experience. You'd think that as the syllabus is quite explicit, we should all be receiving the same information, in the same way. I suppose it's like any subject really, partly the teacher and partly the students. I wondered about age because people who don't have families and not juggling caring for children, parents, partners, animals, houses etc may have Read more..

Blackstart, Thanks for your comments, re the exams. I do feel much better now. One thing we discovered after our early failures was that people who applied for a re-mark got different results - they were raised. Wish I'd done that, I might have just scraped through! Having worked with examination boards at degree and masters level I know that there is double checking of random samples of students by external examiners, to check that the marking is uniform as well as fair; usually marks are agreed Read more..

  • Re: Cryptomeria japonica alba/o spicata (Albo Spicata?)

Forum post by rooibosT42 on 10 Jul 2012

Hi,I didn't check the stems etc but I would have called it a shrub, it was about 3' high and wide growing out vertically and horizontally and quite a rounded shape. They did look it up according to the code on the tree as there wasn't a label and the code identified it as the Cryptomeria. I was a little surprised, I hadn't expected it to be a Cryptomeria but on the other hand the alba/o spicata infers white tips doesn't it? which it had. And there are lots of different Cryptomeria Read more..

Hi there. I thought I'd try and help you although I've never tried to grow a Holm Oak, too big for my garden! I looked it up on Wikipedia as I was wondering about the leaf drop. Initially I think it's very likely that there was insufficient water to the roots - I'm not sure how deep the roots would be on a 7yo tree but probably although the tree was watered it might not have been deeply watered. Personally when I have a deep rooted plant I put a lemonade bottle or similar, without Read more..

Hi, I'm fascinated by this so I hope you don't mind but I posted it on the facebook site of Amateur Gardening. I did wonder if it's some type of fasciation but I don't think it's likely. I'm surprised no-one here has been able to help, there are so many experts, but I hope that I can help. Sarah Read more..

  • Cryptomeria japonica alba/o spicata (Albo Spicata?)

Forum post by rooibosT42 on 09 Jul 2012

Hello, I was at the Bedgebury Pinetum this morning and spied this rather lovely shrub. I asked the staff what it was called and they told me, I should have written it down. I don't know if the albo spicata is a natural variation or a cultivated variety but either way I can't find it anywhere. Is there any conifer specialist out there who recognises it and has an idea of where I might get one? Thank you. Read more..
