  • Re: Pigeon and Pheasant damage

Forum post by Nigel on 24 Apr 2013

Hello Netting or fleece will work. Hanging old CDs up can help, but the flickering light patterns may disturb neighbours. Shooting may help as will a small noisy terrier or two, these also help with rabbits. Nigel Read more..

  • Re: Garden A&E - Fast growing plants to rescue an ugly back yard from concrete slab-itis?

Forum post by Nigel on 20 Apr 2013

Given the relatively short time scale my inclination would be to leave the slabs and permanent planting for the next owners to worry about and go for bright annuals in medium size pots. Could include marigolds, petunias, sweetpeas for a bit of height, pansies, lobelia, whatever the discount plant centre has going. Maybe a few herbs lavender etc. Dahlias are good in pots and are quite bushy and tall, fuchsias are anothe possibility. Keep well watered and because they are in medium size containers Read more..

  • Re: Please help with Escallonia problem.

Forum post by Nigel on 20 Apr 2013

Morning. It could be a combination of factors. The cold weather, strong winds and also the feeding. It might have been better to wait until things had warmed up a little and it was actively growing before feeding. I would just leave it alone, for now, until you see which bits are going to die off and which recover. Then prune off the dead bits. Escallonia are pretty tough so it should pull through. Carboot sales good idea. The joblot are perennials not sure how they will do in pots or wether they will flower this year. Something else you could try would be summer flowering bulbs lilies for example bit of height and some are strongly scented. Nigel Read more..

Good Evening Some perennials do flower in the first year, but they need good conditions and there are no guarantees especially with a poor summer. The hostas are a nice idea if you can find some reasonably priced ones. The summer bulbs you mention ought to flower this summer, but none are that tall though and will do well in pots. Lupins are lovely plants and if you can find some good sized ones they will flower this year and be alright in largish pots don't know how they would do long term in Read more..

Surrey is a bit far for me to travel today. They would probably be better in the ground but pots will do. Need to be quite big as daffodils need to be planted fairly deeply 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb. Nigel Read more..
