  • Re: Spanish moss - easy or difficult?

Forum post by Marty on 30 Jun 2012

Hi all, Thought I'd update my old post as opposed to starting a new one. I realised I think where I was going wrong was putting the moss in a near constant mist from an atomiser and not letting it dry out properly. It seems to be doing better now as I let it dry out between waterings. What I've been looking into is the nutrients it gets from being in the wild where it prefers to hang from bald cypress and Southern live oak trees. Those are both difficult to source in the UK it seems (bald Read more..

It's not far from a town which has questionable air quality and there is a fairly main road that runs between two towns which is quite busy which is about 25 metres from my house. Needless to say, being the 'Black Country' it does have quite a few factories around. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to prevent it being harmful to Spanish Moss... Read more..

  • Spanish moss - easy or difficult?

Forum post by Marty on 27 Jul 2009

Hi all, I really love spanish moss and keep trying to grow it and don't seem to have much luck as yet. I have read people saying they just keep it in their bathroom and make it sound easy to grow but I'm not sure if it really is? What's everyone's opinion on growing it? Read more..

Thanks Phot's-Moll. I wasn't sure if it might be sensitive to tap water or not. I think I'll use rainwater like you say, it sounds like a safer bet. I've read various ideas on feeding, like using orchid feed but am also intrigued about the nutrients they receive from the trees in the wild. I did try previously hanging a piece up over one of those ultrasonic mistmakers but not sure if the mist created by those is in any way harmful? Read more..

I've just been reading about the sensitivity Spanish Moss has to pollution. I'm really worried that where I live has 'acid rain' or the air is really bad as I live in a suburban area not far from a busy road... I'd be interested to know if anyone has had any success with this plant in a big city or suburban areas etc? Read more..

  • Winter damage to garden plants...

Forum post by Marty on 06 Mar 2009

Hi all, I'm sure I'm not alone here suffering some losses of non-hardy plants from this winter. The following are pictures of my less hardy plants after temperatures here of -9C and snow: These are my two Dicksonia antarctica. The one on the right has about 1ft of trunk. Both have straw stuffed into the crowns. I left the fronds on this year and wrapped them in fleece but they look very dead and brown. Hoping they'll both recover. The small one stayed green through last winter. These Read more..

  • Is this normal flowering for a Lupin?

Forum post by Marty on 28 Dec 2008

Hi all, I found this lupin in a field out of its pot after a boot fair and planted it in my garden. People have said to me that it's unusual because of how it has flowered. It's still flowering now in late December, looking the same as in the photos below. Does this look strange or unusual or is it common flowering behaviour? Read more..

Thanks digger and Sue. I did think the leaf growth above the seed pods was the more unusual element than the flowering out of season. I'll do as you say and get some seeds for next year. It might be an unusual new variant! I wasn't sure if frosts or snow might have killed it off, I've already had a bit of both and temperatures here down to about -5C. Read more..

  • Musa basjoo - winter preparation

Forum post by Marty on 14 Oct 2008

Hi all, Already it's time for me to think about protection for my lovely Japanese bananas, one of which has formed a reall nice clump this year. Last year I just waited till the last minute to apply protection. There were a few light frosts then one night it went a degree or two below freezing and the leaves were brown and limp the following morning. I cut them off and wrapped the stem in hessian and it lasted the winter ok. I don't know if that's really bad as I know some people cut Read more..
