I think if you are not sure you should look to see if the canes have any remains of fruit from last year and cut those ones. Also I think the old wood is a darker colour but I'm not sure.

Slugs and snail can climb that high easily so could still be the cause. Damage can also be caused by earwigs which you may not find easily

I think you are supposed to stuff some straw into small pots and put them upside down on top of canes around the area you want to catch them, then remove the earwigs the next day and squash them
