  • Re: Iris question

Thanks everyone. I'll definately cut out the fertiliser. I'll try dividing them, and not planting too deeply. I should have guessed, when I divided the original clump half of them were just left on the surface of the soil (mainlly due to the fact we were building a new house and I knew I'd only end up moving them twice) they did okay! Mine are about three years old, and I get a second flush of flowers. Even if they're not mature enough for a second lot of flowers, you'll stop the plant using energy producing seeds. I dead head most of my perennials, regardless of whether they will produce more flowers or not, unless of course the seed heads are attractive in themselves. As far as the slugs go, I don't have any problems - they do decimate delphiniums and campanulas though Read more..

I've given up on hydrangas for the moment. We live in a frost pocket in Denmark, and they've never thrived. Two years ago I tried protecting them during the winter, by putting chicken wire around them, and filling with leaves. That was partially successful, even with temperatures of minus 20 at night for at least a month! Last year I made the mistake of trying horticultural fleece - it wasn't up to the job, so although they survived all of last years growth didn't. Needless to say Read more..

I love my felco secateurs too, they were a surprise Christmas present from my husband. My second favorite garden tool, would have to be my grandmothers border fork, you can't get them in Denmark, so that's extra special. Read more..

You can make a container to sit your grow bags on. It is possible to buy them (they're quite cheap here in Denmark, but I gather they're more expensive in the UK). There was an artical in Gardener's World mag a few months ago, showing how to make them. You need a plastic box with a lid about the same size as a growbag, a couple of 2liter pop bottles, two plastic plant pots. Cut the edge off the lid, so that it's small enough to sit in the box, about half way up. Cut two holes in the Read more..

  • Re: Moving a climbing rose

Forum post by Snoopysue on 25 Jun 2012

Let us know how you get on. We have a rose (not sure if it's a rambler, or climber - needs tieing in though). In the next few years it'll have to be moved as it's growing up an outhouse that will be demolished. We don't know how old it is, other than it's probably at least 20 years old. Until two years ago it was about 3m by 3m, but a hard winter meant all the top growth died back. We were very happy to discover new shoots when we removed all the dead branches. It's now got Read more..

  • Iris question

Forum post by Snoopysue on 19 Jun 2012

Hi I have a clump of Iris's that were divided about five years ago. They have grown, but don't flower very much, despite regular feeding (usually twice during the growing season). What am I doing wrong? I'm considering dividing them again, to see if that helps. We've just widened our flower beds, and added a new bed - so space is no problem. Thanks Sue Read more..
