  • hellebore niger - rotting at the base or dying away in first season?

Forum post by unsettled-soul on 18 Apr 2013

I planted out 5 hellebore niger around 1.5 month ago and although they never looked too great (not in great shape when they arrived bare rooted and subsequent cold month did not help much I guess) but now I have noticed that they seem to be black rotten at the base: Leaves can be realively easily pulled out. It does not seem to be a hellebore black death as leaves / flowers do not seem blackened. Any idea what it is and if there is something to help them? I have read somewhere that hellebore often Read more..

  • Re: ants eating sunflower?

Forum post by unsettled-soul on 18 Jun 2012

Thank you for all the answers and suggestions - unfortunately poor thing collapsed after strong winds we had here last week. I have however noticed ants on the top of the last remaining sunflower, I wonder what they are up to! I must say I disagree with Zetaearthling - I have vicious red ants in the garden, far from being nice, their bite is very painful and if gets infected (like mine on my foot did last week) you end up at GP and taking antibiotics for a week.... • Re: A use for mint on a hot spring day

Forum post by unsettled-soul on 30 May 2012

I love mojitos on sunny days, very refreshing! I am thinking about trying to mix mint with apple juice - you can buy in ready made in supermarkets (made by Tymbark) so in theory I should be able to replicate the amazing taste :) Read more..

  • mutated tomato flowers

Forum post by unsettled-soul on 28 May 2012

Two of my tomato plants have developed rather weird 'mutated' flowers, much larger than normal ones and they look as a few regular ones cramped together. Here is a picture: https://www.sugarsync.com/piv/D7571237_758_969329047 Any idea what causes this? Also I guess I should remove them as they will not be pollinated and become fruit? Read more..

  • ants eating sunflower?

Forum post by unsettled-soul on 28 May 2012

I have 2 young sunflowers in the garden and noticed one is growing slower than the other. It seems that ants are eating at its base: https://www.sugarsync.com/piv/D7571237_758_969329012 Is that common? Should I just use regular anti-ants solution? I am worried that they will cut the stem and kill the plant. Any ideas? Read more..
