Thanks to both of you for this useful info :) I now know it's "do-able" and what to look for when buying. Just off now to "Google around" for a local a supplier, not the sort of thing your average Garden Centre stocks I suspect ;) Read more..

Thanks for the replies Alex and all :) The pallet planks are spaced 1" apart to help get air (oxygen) in but over the winter I put sheets of cardboard in to "keep it warmer". It may be that it is too dry, I have not watered it much as I did not want it to become a sodden rotting mess ! Now it is warmer I will water it and see what happens, though I have detected it "dropping in height" indicating it is now doing something :) Re "Pee Pee" [ lol ] I understand that Read more..

  • Damson tree, buying only 1, will it pollinate ok ?

Forum post by ghost123uk on 30 May 2012

Hi folks, I hope to buy just 1 Damson tree (no room for more). My first question is = I do not know if there are any other Damson trees in my area, if there are not any nearby, will it pollinate and produce fruit ? My second question is = Can anyone recommend a hardy variety that will be happy being kept quite small, say no more than 10 feet tall. Thanks for looking :) Read more..

Hi, yes I too think my heap might be lacking in "browns". Not sure what to use as "browns" though as I have not had any dead leaves to add ! I do add a certain amount of shredded paper and coffee filters / grounds but thinking about it that won't add up to the recommended 50% Last week, during turning, I added some "compost accelerator", not sure if it will do as it says on the packet, i.e. produce good compost within 2 or 3 months though ! Does anyone have any recommendations Read more..

  • Compost heap not "working"

Forum post by ghost123uk on 22 May 2012

Hi all, new on here, but not new to forums as I have many (too many !) hobbies ! On some forums I am the one answering questions, but on here I fear I may be asking more than I answer as I am a simple amateur gardener, 59 years old with a very typical garden. We moved to our rural cottage 18 months ago and one of the first things I did was build a compost bin from 4 pallets (so around a 5 foot cube). Last year it seemed to work ok(ish). This year it simply is not working. I measure the temperature Read more..

Thanks for the reply Julie :) My 5 ft cube heap got up to 45 degrees C last year (I have a temperature probe thingy) and so that was getting well above ambient temperature. I have been doing a bit of research since I posted my question and it seems it may be to do with low outside temperatures and it might "kick in" when the weather warms up (as it seems to be doing now, AT LAST !)
