fences are no obstacle to cats at all, the local moggies never had any trouble hopping over our 7ft+ garden fencing...dogs are the only man for the job, once they've been chased out a few times they seem to realise the garden is unsafe even when the dogs are no where to be seen, our dogs (tiny dogs-chihuahua and bichon) are house dogs so only out in the garden periodically throughout the day but the cats know the dogs could come flying out the back door at any given moment and are staying well

@Snark, whats the deal with dogs and onions? is it just in really large quantities or is even a small amount risky? ...is cooked as dangerous or is it just raw? i've always wondered about this, years ago (before we knew better) we used to let the dogs (really small dogs Bichon/chihuahua) have the likes of leftover spaghetti bolognese and such...stuff that had absolutely bucketfuls of onion in it, never did them any harm thank god but of course once we heard they can die from eating it that was

yeah they're definitely slug/snail eggs, the simplest remedy...just do what i do when in doubt....fire them over the fence into the neighbours garden, job done lol :D

just a thought but youknow those wildlife rescue centres, if your really struggling with slugs and snails it might be worthwhile to contact a few and see if they're looking for places to safely release hedgehogs! we had absolutely masses of slugs and snails, particularly huge slugs until a hedgehog happened to find his way into our garden, he decimated the slug population practically overnight so he did! he must have thought he's died and gone to heaven lol, he made a nest in the corner of
