  • Re: Which is the best plant to give as a gift on any special occasion?

Forum post by Phot's-Moll on 25 May 2013

Any plant the recipient likes and doesn't already have in excess would do nicely but you could also consider the occasion. For example there are roses with names such as Wedding Anniversary or Ruby Anniversary. Something with silvery foliage or variegation would suit a 25 year anniversary. Plenty of plants share the names of people so if the gift is intended for an individual you might find a match that way. Read more..

Personally I think it looks good in it's natural state and would plant woodland type plants around it and encourage something such as a small flowered rose or small honeysuckle to scramble up it. Read more..

I agree Wisley is good - as are the other RHS gardens. They're especially valuable if you want to research plants for your own garden as everything is clearly labelled and often you'll find several different varieties so you can compare - and that's even without visiting trial grounds. They're still nice gardens to wander round and enjoy though. You should be able to find pictures from them on this site. Great Dixter is lovely to look round and has areas in different styles. http Read more..

I grew this from seed I got several years ago through the RHS seed share scheme but have forgotten the name. The leaves look a little like ground elder and are shiny. They don't smell when crushed. It took a couple of years to flower. It's flowering now. Not sure if it's perennial - thought it wasn't but as I've forgotten the name I could be wrong about that.
