Phot's-Moll is right. You could try moving it to a more sheltered position out of the wind. Water is so important in the summer when buds are forming. Apparently overfeeding in summer can cause this problem too.

I have this about walnut trees as well. You need to sure which type of walnut you are dealing with. The RHS have specialist advisors but I think you need to be a member. Perhaps there is a Community gardens association who could help? Is anything growing under the trees at present.?

Don't worry about the growth at the base, bay trees always send up suckers; they are big trees if allowed to just grow, and its just their way of trying to escape the confines of a lollypop shape. You can just chop them off when the weather warms up a bit. Perhaps it got blasted by frost or cold winds - they are quite tender.

Has anyone seen any lily beetles yet? I was amazed to find one slumbering in a pot of Carex grass. I don't know much about the life cycle; perhaps they can overwinter if its mild enough. Does this mean we must have eyes in the back of our heads all winter these days!

I think you may have to go down the chemical route to get rid of these little blighters. Any spray for aphids should do it. There might be a soft soap spray available for an organic solution to the problem. Read the labels as some of these chemicals kill bees and are best used after sundown.

I have just cut down my Carex elata because it was looking a bit motheaten. As sods law would have it, I then read the next day that sedge grasses shouldn't be hard pruned like this. Will it recover I wonder?

Have had trouble finding 'Growing Success'. Hopefully some more stock will be arriving now spring is on the way. I think you are right Boggy about using nematodes several times in the season, as its so dependent on the right weather conditions. I have a lot of damp shade in my garden and have given up on slug prone plants. Hostas in tall pots with a few slug pellets thrown in for good measure still got eaten.
