I'm sure it will be fine! The stuff that looks like polystyrene is probably the water retaining granules. Main thing is to check that your pot has good drainage (some stones/broken pot at the bottom and good drainage holes) and that you keep an eye on water. The only other risk I can think of is how much nutrient is in the compost: you might have to feed your veggies (e.g. tomatoes generally need feeding anyway because they are hungry buggers). But in the first instance I'd just keep an eye

Hello Gel, Sorry things are still looking bad. Can you try to post a picture? Or else maybe find a picture on the internet that looks similar we can look at? And maybe say a bit about how big your tree is, whether it is in an exposed or sheltered position, etc? I'm sure that would help the experts to give some advice. Otherwise if I have a problem like this I have found that if you take a sample in to your local garden centre there is often somebody there who can give you some advice: that might

Hydrangea heads can be quite heavy - I don't think that's something to worry about. I've just received one as a gift, and each of the flower heads was staked - just a shortish stick stuck through each one and into the soil to keep it standing upright: you could give that a go?

We have been having a similar experience. Acer do seem to be quite fussy. Last year it seemed to be unhappy due to the dry conditions in April (at least, I took some leaves to the local garden centre to see what they thought, and they thought that was more likely than a disease problem). This year it looked really good still in June, but recently some of the leaves are starting to curl/frizz a bit at the edges - so maybe it doesn't like the rain either?! Apparently they don't like exposed

Hello! I am just starting out, so not much advice to offer but would be glad to swap experiences. My only veg growing space is a side return, which is not all that sunny (gets about 5 hours direct sunlight in summer) but is very sheltered and warm (the sun gets bounced between a South facing white wall and a north facing pale green fence). My herbs are in individual pots, but I'm growing fruit and veg in a single wooden container which is 1m50 long by 50cm wide by 50cm deep. I've filled the

Actually, madmuncher has made me realise my rose (Madame Alfred Carriere) was from David Austin, not Peter Beales! All these names just merge into one... Anyway, the David Austin site also has a bit of a search although it's not as detailed: but as madmuncher says, the advantage is that a lot of the more popular ones you can actually find in garden centres, so you don't have to wait in for a delivery if you don't want to: http://www.davidaustinroses.com/english/Search.asp?Theme = I also

You may already have seen it, but the Peter Beales website has quite a lot of search options down the left hand side - so you can search on the type of light you have, how tall you want it to be, flower colour, single/multi-flush, whether it has hips or not (I think!). I think a couple of other rose growers have similar search engines. The only problem I've found with them are there are still too many to choose from, and then if you just go to a garden centre they just have a selection: but it
