  • Re: Bad compost!

Forum post by Janeth on 28 May 2006

Our council collect compostable waste and develop their own compost. Does anyone elses council do this and, if so, whats the compost like? Our council sells it for £2 for 50 litres! I think it's worth trying for the price alone! Janet. Read more..

Thanks for the advise all - from what you say the washing up water will be ok - specially if, as bogweevil says, I alternate it with rain water. My favourite garden was Chris Beardshaws - I have a soft spot for Gertrude Jekyll though..... Read more..

  • Grey Water

Forum post by Janeth on 22 May 2006

'Lo everyone! Despite it tipping it down outside, I was wondering if anyone uses grey water to water their plants? I'm thinking of using my washing up water but can you use it whatever you've washed up? I use environmentally friendly liquid but am concerned using water with things like olive oil, curry sauce etc in it? Do people let the water settle before using it or do you just pour it on!? I might be the 2nd youngest but don't always feel it after a day digging and lugging! I'm still attempting to clear a part of the garden that is teribly overgrown but I can't get excited about pulling out brambles and ivy! I've got a week off in June so I might make myself do it then - I'm planning on making it into a parial shade/woodland area as we have 2 fairly large trees over hanging it. I'm planning a fatsia, hydranga, rhoddies, azaleas, hostas, elephants ears, heuchera....anyone suggest anything Read more..

  • Re: Novice vegetable grower

Forum post by Janeth on 21 May 2006

'lo jb - good luck with the veggies! Rocket likes to be a bit damp with some shade - having said that I grew rocket in full sun last year and it did well. It's normally failry easy to grow, so I'd plant some more seeds out and try again! I'm growing leeks for the first time this year and I'm hoping they'll do well through the autumn and keep us fed. It depends what you like - have you considered growing peas with your beans? Meteor is a very reliable variety... Janet. Read more..

Hello Sammie - I'm fairly new o this lark too but I grew toms lat year. I grew alicante in grow bags outside the back door - they seem to do very well. I don't think you need to worry about the plants turning a little bit yellow - mine have slightly. I think you should start feeding the plants when the flowers start showing - tomorite is fab and not just for toms, but for any productive plant. I've not planted my toms out yet, I'm waiting for a couple of weeks but I have planted out my tumblers, Read more..

Hello all, Digger invited me to pop in for a chat! I've been reading the thread - although it's all about every day things it's fascinating! I've never grown a peony but like the look of them. They have a reputation for being difficult. Where's the best place to put them and do they need a lot of attention? What's the best type to get? Read more..
