  • Re: Help with white eggs / spots or fungi on Bonsai tree leafs?

Looks like natural exudate - to me. Leaves of some trees shrubs do this, so nothing to worry about. Sometimes but not always related to overwatering Read more..

Fungus gnats feed mostly on decaying organic matter in wet composts. They can damage root hairs on seedlings but are unlikley to damage an established plant. Things that jump will not be gnat larvae - but probably springtails - these too feed on decaying organic matter in damp composts. So the compost may be a little too damp? Read more..

Rather than an unregistered product (washing up liquid) try an organic pesticide based on fatty acids (which works in much the same way – breaking down the external lipid layer of soft bodied insects causing them to dehydrate and die). The reason I say this is that washing up liquid has NOT been tested for safety to plants, or believe it or not there is no requirement that it is safety tested for humans (once you start looking into the ingredients of common washing up liquids and look up the safety Read more..

I wouldn't bank on it - see http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/quality/chemicals/pesticides/insecticides-bees/ + The French and Italians and I think the Germans only banned the seed treatment versions, not the sprays as it often suggested in the press - basically because of misuse - seed was coated with too much of the stuff and when the seed was planted the dust blew accross fields. Not sure what the situation in Holland is. Read more..

Well enough informed to not want to enter a debate on if Neonics are or are not having the effects reported by some (I have read the original scientific papers in Nature etc.) - the research is not perfect/has floors - but it is worrying and further investigation is needed – the decision is up to the Chemicals Regulation Directorate - as advised by the Advisory Committee on Pesticides (who take advice from Scientific literature, other committees etc.) Bug-life has its own agenda and is usually opposed Read more..

Thank you for pointing in the direction of the climateprediction net ( http://climateprediction.net/ ) website this is a very balanced website that admits the inconsistences/errors/difficulties etc. in predicting the changing climate it also gives a good (in my view unbiased) summary of what is known about the climate and how it works – most importantly it is a project that you can get involved in by donating some of your own PCs spare capacity (an indication of how complex it all is, requiring 1000 Read more..

OK you need to get some things right if your arguments are to have any weight– Met office is part funded/owned by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills – but gets a good proportion of its money from commercial operations – this admittedly includes providing forecasts for the MOD around the work, but also the NHS. It was once part of the MOD but this was a long time ago. It is unwise to use belief when referring to science – Good (emphasis on the good here) science is a methodology that Read more..

As usual the met office gives a good balanced view of the real situation. But I don't see any contradiction with many of the climate change senarios - the final quote you give is one of the best summaries of one of these scenarios I have seen. But I still wish to know who are 'they'? And you and I are part of the public it is obvious that you are not 'brainwashed' (I hope) nor are many other members of the forum. Read more..
