Go ahead and pinch them out. They will produce more flowers that way anyway. What a lovely spring it is! Read more..

I think your dahlias will be ok with your improvised cover unless it is a very hard frost which seems unlikely. If there is a bit of damage dont despair. There is a good chance that they will shoot again from below ground. Of course if the polar bears eat them that is another problem. Read more..

  • Re: How is your garden growing?

Forum post by Snark on 13 May 2013

What is your soil like? I have never been able to grow lupins here and only realised recently that they need acid soil.I thought that I was just unlucky with a tough cottage garden type plant. Apparently the real enthusiasts grow them in containers with ericaceous compost. I'm not quite that keen but will work some sulphur into the soil for what may be my final attempt. Read more..

Here in Suffolk we are about 4 weeks behind on most things. We have had incredible wind burn with what I thought was tough stuff like evergreen honeysuckles looking as if they have been attacked with a flame gun. Some things are flowering and going over rather fast but some are ok. The blackthorn is stunning. The cultivated plums have flowers but many fewer than I would have expected. Meanwhile in the woods the bluebells are right on time. Read more..

  • Re: Do I need a male or female kiwi plant?

Forum post by Snark on 28 Apr 2013

If it ever flowered you might be able to sex it but I had a supposedly self fertile one for about 12 years before I threw it out as it never flowered at all. Yours sounds as if it has even more of a problem. What is your soil like? I was told some time after my failure that they prefer acid soil and mine is very alkaline. Read more..

  • Re: Root Trainers

Forum post by Snark on 24 Apr 2013

I use root trainers a fair bit for deep rooted stuff like sweet corn and beans. If your tomato plants are going outside they shouldn't go out for another couple of weeks as it is still a bit cold for them at night. That means that they will need to be potted on to stop them getting root bound and to get them bigger and more robust before they go out. If they are to grow under cover you could probably plant out straight from root trainers. Read more..

Forum post by Snark on 23 Apr 2013

It sounds as though there is a possibility that you are getting interested in the garden. Watch it or you might turn into a sad weirdo like the rest of us! Meanwhile absolutely the best cheap source of plants is another gardener. Most of us have bits and bobs to give away.I always have loads but am probably 150 miles away.Could you scrounge from your neighbours(perhaps not the dog owners!) or relatives or even look for a local gardening club. Your biggest problem is that you want a quick effect in Read more..
