I did have a problem with "blown sprouts: a few years back and an old sage informed me that I should have heeled the plants in firmly. Since then I have done this and, touch wood, the problem has not reoccurred. Good luck! Read more..

  • Re: RHS I Phone App

I may have completely misunderstood the question ( I am very good at that), but when I look at the "my garden "page on the app there is, at the bottom right hand side of the page, a sign saying "sync". I find that if you touch that it takes you through to the Apple site and updates your bundles (if there are any updates available of course) Have a go and good luck to you! Read more..

  • Re: upright blackberry plant looks healthy?

Forum post by Juliska on 23 Oct 2012

I would not be at all worried. It have just planted a couple of "Rubens" primocane type and their leaves (or what is left of them) are not at all a pretty sight. I think it is just normal autumn leaf deterioration. I would be very surprised if by next spring the new leaves did not look perfect. Good luck Read more..

I certainly have seen this on a few occasions and am sure that the seedlings will, in time, produce small trees. However, I would very much doubt whether they will ever be "fruitful." However, it is always interesting to see what develops. Good Luck to you. Read more..

  • Re: Gardeners Delight tomatoes splitting - any ideas why?

Forum post by Juliska on 25 Sep 2012

My Greenhouse cherry types usually suffer from this in early autumn and I feel the reason may from the increasing level of natural humidity. I find that at this time of the year, even with a reasonable degree of night time ventilation, all my plants are covered in moisture first thing in the morning. Shorter days, heavier dews - etc. etc. Read more..

  • Re: Blackening on tomatoes, blossom end rot or not?

Forum post by Juliska on 14 Sep 2012

Sounds to me like the dreaded blight. It is rife in my part of the world and, despite spraying with the latest approved product, it ruined all my outdoor crop. I have also had it in my greenhouse. Are your affected fruit by a window or vent. Mine were. Read more..

  • Re: Compost confusion

Forum post by Juliska on 30 Aug 2012

We have been composting for some years now but in our experience the larger the bin the more successful the compost. Those bins of around a metre cube seem to be the best. The tumbler composter types are certainly quicker but my results from both mine are always lumpy and has to "rest" for a few weeks. I purchased my metre bins from "Plantpak" and also "Link a bord" If anyone goes for the latter I would avoid the propagater top thing. Mine became so hot that it destroyed Read more..

  • Blight on Tomatoes

Forum post by Juliska on 10 Aug 2012

Despite spraying with the newly approved blight control twice since mid July I noticed yesterday that some of my out door plants had developed this problem. Greenhouse plants remain fine so far. Everything which was touched went directly to me local tip. I have resprayed the remainder again and have my fingers firmly crossed. However, the interesting think I have noticed is that the affected plants were all of the grafted types- Belriccio and Gardeners Delight. All my conventional cordon varieties Read more..
