Why should you get anti slug proof plants! Try the following!!!! I am currently cutting up copper scourers into collars to place around my courgettes, and read in a gardening magazine copper is a slug repellent and have actually undone some copper scourers and am going to crochet them (chain from) and place around my plants (much to the amusement of my partner) who thinks I AM OFF MY ROCKER If you have access to hundreds of eggshells you can scatter crushed eggshells (LOTS) AROUND PLANTS We have Read more..

Forum post by freckledfrog66 on 11 Jul 2005

We have sucessfully created a vegetable and fruit garden on one third of out garden, after encountering stones (from masses of tiny ones to boulder size, heavy clay, an incline, brambles, bindweed, course grass and an extremely windy garden...so there is hope. Having only started this year we have outdoor tomatoes (doing well), courgettes, apples, pears, rhubarb, and are in the process of digging out more from turf which we have stacked grass side down!!!!! We marked our beds, used an edger, and then Read more..

Tomatoes in hanging baskets are worthwhile. I had a few in a hanging basket called tumbler and got loads of little cherry tomatoes, the only downside is that they need constant watering, maybe twice a day in summer. I had marigolds with mine and some trailing flowers!! Good luck Read more..

  • Re: Slug/snail Nematodes - do they work?

Forum post by freckledfrog66 on 07 Apr 2005

Hi there Have you got anywhere to encourage slow worms, which we have loads of in our garden which apparently munch slugs. I am thinking of having a small wildlife pond next year and am going to try and encourage frogs which keep the slug population down!!!!! Birds in your garden should eat a few slugs too and also hedgehogs although I will not be encouraging them as I read somewhere that they eat frogs (is this true?). Hope this is of some use Read more..

Hi We have moved into a house with a very large garden, and there are five of us here, and we have a water meter. what size water butt is best as I will be having a veg plot up the top of the garden which hopefully will be quite big later on ( will be so fit carrying water up the garden which is slightly uphill too)! Are there any other ways to conserve water apart from mulching too? Thanks Read more..

  • Re: Cats: does anyone know................

Forum post by freckledfrog66 on 04 Mar 2005

Hi I had a huge problem with cat mess on my lawn and someone suggested filling empty clear 2 litre plastic bottles (pop bottles) with water and placing them on their side on the garden, and I am pleased to say it did work on my lawn as the cats do not like seeing their reflection! Good luck Read more..

  • Very wide bare garden

Forum post by freckledfrog66 on 24 Feb 2005

Hi there We have recently moved to a very large garden!! All the boundary fences are very low and its on a very windy site (not so conducive to having a veggie patch at top of garden)!! Any ideas on windbreaks will be welcome. The plot is about 50ft wide and 67ft long (not including a side bit!) I know what I need/want in the garden but haven't got a clue what to do about trying to make the garden appear narrower!! We have some apple and pear trees on the right of the garden that the neighbours said Read more..
