If the area isn't that big, then consider using a turf lifting iron . The design is quite old but it is a good design, makes the job easy and surprisingly quick and allows you to skim off nice even slices of turf. Once the top layer is skimmed off, you can then go over it and take out any tap-rooted weeds and big stones; even on your knees, it isn't an onerous task. I was thinking the same, butterhead - not many bees about this spring. Our apple trees are in full bloom, too, so I went out with a little paintbrush and pollinated them myself. They are on dwarfing rootstocks so the job was quite easy but if you can reach the blossoms on your trees you could try the same.

If you go for laying the patio around the tree, do make sure you leave enough of a gap so that it can get water. I've seen patios laid right up to the trunk of trees, which then die of thirst.

The first thing that comes to mind is that it was cut at the wrong time, as tree pruning is generally done when they are dormant. I could be wrong, of course. Has it been bleeding sap at all?
