I know that you can purchase garden cane supports in various sizes and shapes and prices, but I wanted ones that cost nothing and just used items I had around the house. I used a small pvc pipe that was left over from my son's old play tent. Some instructions on my blog if you are interested here http://ploughyofurrow.blogspot.com/2012/02/diy-plant-supports.html if you are interested. Note they are not very aesthetically pleasing but they are funtional ! Read more..

  • Vine weevil

Forum post by jamesk34 on 23 Feb 2012

I was in my veg/fruit patch today clearing up and digging out some strawberry plants that I intend to replace. When I was digging the plants out, I found vine weevil grubs !!! I am hoping that the remainder of my strawberry plants will not be affected by these wee blighters !!!! I also just realised that vine weevil may be to blame for the leaves on my 2 Euonymus fortunei 'Silver Queen' shrubs being continuously eaten. The plants do survive, so I am not sure that they are attacking the roots Read more..

Mike, thanks for the reply. None of the strawberry plants showed any signs of attack and in fact the yield last season was good. Just a bit worried that I found them on the plot after digging out the old plants. As for the euonymus, I was only guessing at vine weevil after finding them under the strawberry plants today. The euonymus do not die but growth is affected as any leaf on the plant gets eaten but obviously the grubs have not attacked the roots yet. Could be a case of me putting 2+2 and getting Read more..
