It would help to know if ti is a black walnut or a common walnut. Black walnuts are allelopathic which means that they secrete a chemical that can be poisonous to other plants. If you do not know which it is and cannot identify it, it is best to play safe and plant "tolerant" plants. You can find a list at http://gardening.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=gardening&cdn=homegarden&tm=147&f=00&tt=13&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//hort.uwex.edu/articles/black

Sorry you seem to be having a problem. If you only planted them a month ago I assume that they were container grown. If that is the case, the most likely reason for the yellowing, I am afraid, is that the planting holes are not draining and are full of water. Almost all tree roots need drainage to allow them to breathe (exceptions are things like willows and alders). A waterlogged planting hole will make survival more difficult and will encourage the onset of root rot which may kill the tree. Given

Hi Milly143, welcome, If it's too much of a job to put some weed control fabric down (under gravel, those fabrics will start to fall apart within about 10 years anyway), then spraying with a glyposate based weedkiller like round-up is your best option at this point (you won't need to cover with binliners). In future years, regular raking & hoeing of the gravel in spring/early summer will help to destroy many weeds before they have a chance to put down proper roots. Alternatively, you

I think everyone has covered the main points here, the only thing I have to add is a dose of wee-wee. Great for your heap, adds a kick of nitrogen and saves water in the loo. Have fun, Ed

Hi ghost123uk, welcome, Damsons are self fertile, let me know the variety you are looking at and I can double check. Damsons are tough plants so you can take your pick with regards to hardiness. If you want to restict the size, the quickest way to get a compact, mature tree is to buy a damson that has been grown as a "bush", which just means that it has been pruned to have a short trunk. Or you can buy a maiden (the smallest size) and prune it into a bush yourself. You will probably have

Hi alicemusician, welcome, Some plants are prone to a condition called "specific replant disease", which means that it is not recommended to plant, for example, a new sapling apple tree in the soil where an old apple tree was recently removed. Sycamores are in the maple group (Acers) and so if you want to plant something totally different like a bamboo (be sure to choose a clumping variety unless you want it to take over your garden), there will no problem. By all means improve the soil

Hi Andy, welcome, Ideally need to know what your conditions are like: soil type, drainage, amount of sun. Ivy is a very good ground cover plant for pretty much any site and there are plenty of varieties with ornamental leaves. In sunny sites it is pretty vigorous. Ed

Hi olegunnar20, Your question is essentially "will an unidentified arthropod harm your veg plants?". Phrased like that, I'm sure you can see how it's not really possible to give an answer. The one thing we know about it is that it is feeding on well decayed plant matter, which indicates, as pesty says, that they are unlikely to attack your living veg. If you recently bought the mulch and aren't happy with it, then it's up to you if you want to go and get a refund. If you

Hi Sue, welcome, Really need to see photos to comment, but it's early days for your plant & I doubt that there's anything wrong. When last year did you plant it? Did you notice any damage after those late spring frosts? Ed

My pleasure. If the soil test indicates that it needs feeding, use a fertiliser like sulphate of potash that doesn't contain nitrogen: Wisteria's roots have symbiotic bacteria that produce soluble nitrogen in the same way as clover or peas. Excess nitrogen will encourage leafy growth at the expense of the flowers. Ed
