I would really love some small trees for a north facing wall (for the plants) and would wonder if miniature cherries, crab apple, holly and willow, some perenials and such would be available for me, ferns too and low cover i would love as well. I am mad about birds and used to bird watch for years with Birdwatch ireland, unfortunately i am Read more..

this is a fishing/harbour town, this area was once farm land and maybe some of the men supplimented income by fishing, hence the oyster shells, although i just dont think oyster fishing was prominent around here. there was a sort of affluent house around here and this small hoose is part of that house's land. well, tis a while since posting. I got a whole lot of ranches from twins garden and i have painted them dark blue and purple, they shall be in the raised bed for perches for the birds, and Read more..

designer a nightmare! Buddha got an arch made of trellis and a splayed trellis on top and bound together. the contoniasta goes neatly over the top and bud sits on a heavy table and slats around him. he looks so good!!! laughing madly. Decided to just paint the concrete a very soft warm terracotta/pink for the mo, and sort out if i can afford an 'extra room' of a conservatory lean to. I am not going to rush this now. Around Bud will be all sorts of ferns, grasses and russet colours, and of Read more..

raised bed was denuded of the first two feet of soil and vegetation. a heck of a lot of glass was found, but also oyster shells, old coins, all english. the last two has me wondering, do we have a swash buckling oyster eating englishman here in this garden in times past? I do live on the coast but i would not have thought a raised bed in social housing would have produced oyster shells! the english money was just a few pence pieces, so i didnt make my millions. this area was once a farm, then an Read more..

  • concrete problems need more concrete consideration!

Forum post by patiopal on 09 Sep 2009

I am in social housing with a all concrete patio garden. I was hoping to make a haven and get rid of the concrete. my neighbour tells me the concrete is about six inches thick and then more stuff under that, and then earth not soil. I am now thinking of this: have a PLATFORM area of patio slabs on top of the concrete away from the house so that damp levels will not be a problem and the water course can still allow rain and run off do its job to the drain at the end of the patio to the left. Forum post by patiopal on 05 Sep 2009

I have decided to ask a handyman to come for a day and remove all the soil from the raised bed, get rid of all the rubble, mangled roots and sherds of pots, glass, crock and any more sheep's teeth he may find. It is so impacted but very little can grow there i feel. please could you tell me is this a good option? I do have bishops weed in it and so i feel i have no option! What is the difference between TOPSOIL and SUBSOIL. when i get new soil what do i have to do! My sis has a riding school Read more..

Not hopeful. a few days indoor, yesterday outside on pots so air can circulate and sunny/shaded from wind but yet last night soil still sodden. But we had torential rain and i forgot about the canes. so i feel i am onto a deadringer of a looser here. I dont know what to do. Next idea is to put them in my kitchen top shelf which is open, it wont get overly hot there as i rarely cook and it is not a dry place but is shaded. That way they will get light, a regulated tempe. and wont get absolutely drenched Read more..
