Less than a year ago Neasden Primary in Hull who are one of our partner schools created an allotment and started growing vegetables, the school involved parents with the ‘Get Your Grown Ups Growing’ event in September and since then they have been involved in looking at ways they can cook the produce they grow. As a development of their gardening and cooking activities the school organised a 'Food and Farming Day' in which the children could learn about the methods growers and farmers use to produce food locally.

Little did I realise that the investigation of worms could create so much enthusiasm from children and that some teachers would respond with so much horror. Wisley students Andy and Chris as well as local recycling officers will vouch for this as they helped me with gardening sessions in Yorkshire schools during the last weeks

The children at one of our Yorkshire Partner Schools, Neasden Primary' in Hull are opening a cafe once a month. They are using their cooking skills to use crops they have grown in the school garden to serve to other children, staff and members of the community. The children will hopefully earn some money for the school garden but the aim will be for them to gain valuable business and practical skills. They are forming themselves into a company and each child will apply for an advertised post. The children are also growing bedding plants and are going to prepare hanging baskets for sale. This winter secondary schools in Yorkshire and the Humber area are considering integrating gardening into their curriculums under the STEM initiative. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).They are considering projects which will link these subjects together and gardening is an ideal medium to do this
