The festive season got off to a flying start this year at Harlow Carr with Santa whizzing in from Lapland with a couple of his trainee reindeer and assorted helpers last weekend. An unprecedented number of visitors watched them arrive with their sleigh on a perfect sunny and frosty winter day and joined in the festive procession following his sleigh around the garden to his grotto.

GARDEN CLOSED TODAY, Sunday 7 December, due to extremely icy paths. Whilst the recent snowfall brought a serene beauty to the Garden, compacted snow on the paths is now frozen solid. It is not possible to put salt on these paths as this would contaminate the soil and potentially damage the plants. Please ring 01423 724681 for further information. RHS Shop & Plant Centre and Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms are open as usual

We were all very sad to hear of the death of Geoffrey Smith last Friday. Geoffrey came to Harlow Carr as a young man of 26, full of enthusiasm, ideas and determination - and no little skill too. With a small team and miniscule resources he set about carving out a garden from an empty field in a cold, windswept valley. His legacy at Harlow Carr was establishing, from the outset, two key aspects; that the garden should be as natural as possible - he would often describe Harlow Carr as ‘a Yorkshire Dale in miniature' - and that it should demonstrate plants and gardening methods applicable to gardeners in the north

Monday 8 December - the Garden has re-opened now the thaw has set in. There are still some paths where the ice has not melted but the Gardeners are working hard to open all areas
