How far back should one prune a Hydranger, just trim it or take it back to the ground level and when should it be done?

Hydrangeas are usually pruned in springtime. As they flower on wood from the previous year, remove the flower heads and any dead, damaged sections. Then cut say a third of the stems down to ground level to encourage new shoots for flowers for next year.

If badly overgrown you can cut the whole tthing back to the base, but you will get no flowers that year.
