To me the reason it may appear too serious is the small number of regular contributors. Most of those who partcipated in "Over the Garden Fence" left for pastures new soon after the closure was announced. Also the "old fashioned"  formal look. Add to this the somewhat clunky user interface for contributions and the difficulty some people have in adding photos. Throw in the length of time it has been since many threads were added to and it is not particularly appetising to people who find the site.

I recently had to get my password reset by the "Webmaster". In his e-mail he apologised for the delay and said that this forum was on an old platform which makes it difficult to maintain (having worked with IT specialists for many years I have a lot of sympathy with this) but that they were in the process of replacing it..... Don't know what that means. Also number of contributors is only one measure of its use ..... I look at the forum many more times than I contribute and I am sure there are people who never contribute but nevertheless use the forum

I do still find the forum can be a source of very sensible advice and information rather than gossip and visit the site at least once a day. Yes, I know I should get out more! I consider it was devalued a couple or so years ago when, for some reason or other, several of the excellent RHS advisory contributors stopped posting. I have had a look a the discussion page on the main RHS website but find I am insufficiently intelligent to fathom it out.

I agree that the forum is still a source of useful advice. As for the discussion page on the main RHS site It's not easy to use and doesn't seem particularly well used.

Well I, for one, find this website invaluable. I have so much help an advice and plant identification from experts in the field that I would be lost without it. I have tried looking at the forums that others have joined and, much as this one is a bit 'old-fashioned/clunky', I find the others difficult to find the same level of useful info. I like this forum as it allows me to see 'posts I haven't read' which gives me the perfect feed about all the topics that interest me with one click rather than having to go searching for recent updates on other sites. I hope they keep this forum, albeit upgrade it a bit.

Just to add my 10 pen'rth re the RHS discussion page. It didn't seem to be able to work out whether I was already registered or not. Not a surprise it isn't well used. I never did get into the hibiscus discussion.

     Morning

I've just emailed the RHS webmaster to ask what the plans are for this forum. Apologies in advance if this finally kils off the forum, but it would be nice to know. Will post what if any response I get.

I have been informed. ( by some one who should know ) that this forum is doooomed. Also that I would be best advised to address my infantile comments elsewhere. I shall do exactly that and cancel my regular contributions to this charity.

Not good news - UNLESS it is to be replaced by something that works better (there are glitches in this like when trying to load pictures and links when using some browsers) AND preserves the feature Minnie refers to above AND MOST IMPORTANT the information gathered is transferred to the replacement. I don't think we are asking much!!!

I have not had a reply yet.Backache's information is no great surprise, although the bit about infantile comments was uncalled for and unnecessary. Unfortunately Nell this forum is unlikely to be replaced with an improve version. When the closure was announced members were advised to use the RHS facebook page or the comment and conversation sections in the main RHS website.

I have been unable to log in for few days, so thought they had either chucked me out or cancelled the forum without warning!

I am new on this website as I registered a while ago but couldnt login but a very kind man has recently assisted me to get logged in. (Thank You)

I have to say this is one of the better gardening forums I have found, although I havent been able to login to post I have been viewing posts that have interested me and found some great advice.

I started gardening 18 months ago when we brought a house that actually had a garden and it is a reasonable size garden, I tried numerous gardening forums to seek help for all sorts of questions and help I required but found that my posts didnt get answered often and on one site I couldnt even register (one website i found had no new posts since 2007)Sad

So eventually out of desperation to get assistance and chat to like minded people in February I setup my own forums (ukgreenfingers.co.uk for anyone who maybe interested) but it is very lonely there with only myself, my mum and my auntie as members.

I can understand why they are closing the forums but I will miss the useful information I have found from here and from what I have read it is only temporary while they re-vamp them so surely its for the best?

If any lost souls would like to take refuge on my website (ukgreenfingers.co.uk) during the downtime here then please do come across, it maybe a little empty currently but I am sure it would soon fill up (I am not spamming or trying to sell anything but please remove if I have over-stepped the mark)

I for one will be watching this space though to see if / when the forums are back up and running here as it seems like a nice place and I use the RHS website an awful lot anyway for reference.

I have only been able to login today so this is my first postEmbarrassed it is a shame they are closing the forums but hopefully we will have newer brighter forums again soon and there are other options available in the meantime.

Now I can login I shall post my current queries over the weekend so I can get some help before it is too late and if anyone does need a home I shall see you on my forums :)

I hope anybody reading this has a great weekend

    Thanks :)

Hello ... and welcome. I agree there is a lot of useful information here .... and as you have found out you can get a lot from the forum without ever posting to it. There are some very knowledgeable people who post here and it is good to see the discussion around some of the questions raised. Cheers
