We run a parent-led gardening group at my kids' primary school. In the (concrete as far as the eye can see) playground we've put in 3 raised beds and 6 trees (silver birch and rowans) in 1mx1m deep oak planters.

Last year we planted bulbs under the trees (scilla, snowdrops, narcissus, snakes head frits, celandines and mini irises). The trees so far have bare earth under them, and I wondered what woudl be a good thing to plant over the bulbs to act as a natural mulch and also to give a nice green cover for them to poke through?

It's fine if it cascades over the sides or not, but it would need to be tough enough to withstand the inevitable 'pruning' it would get from little hands. We're in Liverpool and it's a fairly exposed site I guess.

On a similar note, we have a mini orchard of espaliers and I want to know what to plant on the bare earth underneath and around the trees that will stop weeds taking over and look nice..I tried wild strawberries but they all died!

    Thanks for any advice.
