I have a young lilac tree, planted a couple of years ago.  A few days ago, its leaves suddenly died and dropped, and I notice that its buds have all turned black as well - in fact the tree appears to have died.  I'm worried that someone who came to do some gardening for me last Saturday may have used weedkiller around the base of the lilac.  If this is the case, do you think my tree could recover?  I'm afraid my orange blossom tree might be going the same way as well... :(

i would check around the base of the plants to see if you have had something nibble through the bark. seems unlikely that a weedkiller would have such effect so quickly on a shrub unless it were sprayed intentionally, empty a few buckets of water around the shrubs to dilute anything that has been applied by mistake. i would remove some of the top soil before that even just to make sure that clean water gets to the roots properly and then replace with new soil.

Thank you, courierdude - I'll try that and see what happens.
