I have a small circular lawn...enclosed by brick paving. The bricks were deliberately laid evenly even though I knew that the lawn dips noticeably on one side. The local garden centre recommended a slow and patient approach...rather than turfing...I.e. raising the level gradually by raking in a half in layer of topsoil every few weeks and letting the existing grass grow through. I have started to do this....and I am very patient if the likelihood is that it will work well. Any suggestions?....as I don't want this to be a wasted exercise. Has anyone raised a level this way before please?

I've done bits of this sort of thing and it does work. To get it properly level, it's a good idea to put a roller over it every few months to help flatten things out - you can hire them by the day quite cheaply.

I have done this in areas with some success but it does take patience. However, if it is a very small area I would be tempted to roll the turf back on one side and put the soil underneath then re-lay the original turf back on top - this is something else I have done successfully. It depends on the area and also how much you are trying to raise the lawn by.

Thanks for your suggestions. The grass needs to be raised by 3 inches along one side. My concern about digging it up on one side is that I will end up with a very uneven lawn. I have turfed before, I just thought it might be a cheaper and less invasive job. Will look at hiring a roller, methinks.

bear in mind that if you were to turf the lawn that you might have to do the whole lawn or you might end up with 2 distinctly different shades and growth rates per side. if you have been living with it as it is then i would go the slowly slowly adding topsoil or adding soil under the turf route to ensure that you keep your evenly matched grass types

Yes, I can see it might be the est option. Just knowing it will work in,the long-run, I will work towards it slowly. Thanks a million for your input.
