Two years ago I bought a half standard rose from Lidl. It was called Snowbell. I was unable to prune it last year and its four stems are now about six feet tall. I have in the past taken cuttings from roses by putting them into sand lined slits in my very heavy ground but as my garden is being remodelled I have no clear ground to do. I have come up with the idea of putting the cuttings between two large plastic pots to mimic the slit in the ground. I would place soil into the inner pot and keep them in my porch, where I could keep an eye on them. Do you experienced gardeners think that I have a chance of success and is there anything that I can do to improve my chances.

Hi Valerian, when I've done rose cuttings, I just push the stems in around the edge of a pot of sandy compost. Water the pot and leave it outside somewhere fairly sheltered until late the following summer. As long as it doesn't dry out, the stems root.

Also saw an idea where an old compost bag was used - it was cut open and laid out flat and moist compost spread on one half, the stems were laid on that, more compost was spread over them and then the rest of the plastic was folded over it all, leaving the stems poking out. Then it was rolled up like those rolled chocolate cakes with creamy stuff in them and tied with string. I'd think it should work okay.

Hope it works, whatever you do.

Hello Miranda, Thank you for your help. I think that I have enough material to try your way and mine. Although I will keep them both outside. I have not any grow bags so I'll give that way a miss. How is your arm? Have I remembered correctly, that you hurt yourself about the same time that I hurt my right arm? I just do not bounce like I used to, even though I'm the right shape.

Hope it works well, Valerian, and that you get lots of roses.

It's good to see you posting again, though it sounds like you had a rough time of it. My arm/back is pretty much better, thank you, but I'm aware that it isn't as strong as before and need to take more care.
