silly question

    I am helping garden for my neighbour,I normally mulch my borders in Spring and Autumn, they have a weed suppressant membrane 1 is it worth mulching? 2 how do I layer eg Lavender do I just cut the membrane.

    Hi Fruitloop, Re mulching, mulch over a weed membrane will freshen up the look, in the short term, but of course it will provide something for weed seeds to grow in. The advantage then is that roots can't easily go down so weeding is easier. Bark is often used as a mulch over a membrane because weeds can't get established in it so easily. But if you're mulching to improve the soil, you'd have to remove the membrane first. As for layering, just cut a small slit in the membrane and layer as you would normally. That should work fine.     Thanks very much, I'll persuade them to let me put some more bark down.Made me realise that I don't want a membrane in my own garden!
