Early this year I bought a pot grown Populus x Candicans `Aurora`, and subsequently planted it out in my front lawn, where it seemed to thrive, reaching about 2 m high by midsummer. One morning, I was staggered to find that almost every leaf had been eaten away. I couldn`t believe that an insect could devour so much foliage in just one night.

Can anyone tell me what could have caused this? There didn`t appear to be any trace of anything when I looked over the tree.

    Many thanks.

If the leaves have been eaten rather than dropped off it could be one of the sawflies that can attack Poplar. Not a great worry at this time of year - leaves are about to drop anyway.
