Can anyone help me? On my mum's side lawn there are several large patches of grey/black which become very noticeable when the grass is cut. It can only be described as being like burnt paper lurking among the grass. I have tried to remove it by raking the affected areas but this will not remove all of it. I'm wondering if the fact that it's a seaside garden could be a factor (the sea is less than half a mile away) If anyone has any ideas of what it is or how to treat it, I'd be more than grateful.

Could be a number of fungal dieseases, Necrotic ring spot is one . It normally indicates that the lawn has been neglected. Try cutting the grass higher than normal and do not feed in the spring. I believe that the only chemical cure's are know all licensed so you would need to call in a proffesional.
