  Reply | Contact You could do worse than starting with 'An Ear to the Ground' by Ken Thompson, a distinguished scientist at Sheffield University. This book is a very readable look at soil, composting, and numerous other aspects of gardening and ecology, and is full of practical information. It's not an academic treatise but it's authoritative as well as entertaining. Should be on every gardener's bookshelf - but obviously it's not because you can find it on Amazon for about 50p. Alex
