I've set my heart on a Thalictrum delavayi; apparently the cursed slugs don't like them! But they need a sheltered spot, and my garden doesn't have any really. I was wondering how big the root system is and if they would thrive in a large pot? about 40 cm across and 35 cm tall. Any feedback from thalictrum growers would be hugely appreciated!

Fortuantely for me, all my varieties of Thalictrum are growing in borders amongst some tall plants, They have no protection from about 2'6" and they survive anything the weather throws at them, including high winds. And they self seed everywhere. So you could put them in a large pot near the border and let them seed. They will grow where they are happy.

I'm getting 3 plug plants, so I'll try one in a pot and hope that they self seed madly! I've also bought some shade netting to try to protect them against the howling gales - such a fantastic plant, and I'd never heard of them till recently. I just hope it's true that slugs hate them, because they are destroying everything, even my ivy!

I'm pretty sure you'll find the slugs ignore them. I've grown several different varieties of thalictrum, and the rampaging slugs, chewing down so much else, always leave them alone.

That's great to know, because they're not cheap and the whole purpose of planting them is because they are listed as something the slugs don't like!
