Situated in a pot on the West of Ireland. What is it! ... a Tree? a Shrub? Name? It appeared suddenly on the side of a bigger pot and looked interesting so we transferred to its own pot and it seemed to like that idea! Anybody know what it is! Any thoughts would be so much appreciated. We have posted pics via PhotoBucket and hope they display. Many thanks in advance. Chamol

    Welcome Chamol.

It looks like a Salix. Common name willow.

    Possibly Salix caprea.

Thank you Silver Surfer for that. Unsure where it came from. Unaware of any other Willows around. Guess it could have come on the wind from quite a distance! Looking forward to seeing how it progresses. Guess at some stage will have to un pot it and plant directly in the ground. Many thanks again. Much appreciated. C

I don't think your tree is a salix caprea. I have one in my garden and the leaves are quite different. Does it get any flowers?

I still feel this is Salix.

I may well be miles out with my suggestion of Salix caprea.

There are after all approx 400 different Salix species.

Needing a real expert to id them. .... which I am certainly not

I felt the hairyness of the leaf and stipules reminded me of Salix.

There is a Salix caprea variety sphacelata which seems a possibility.

But again it is just a suggestion.....

Hi Julie. Thank you for your reply. You ask if it flowers! .... I discovered it growing in the spring at the side of a bigger pot. It was only a little sapling. I transferred it it to the pot you see in the photos and it has grown rapidly. No flowers that have appeared ... yet!  It does not look like anything around where we have the garden. The area is full of Ash trees and its certainly not ash. I am afraid I am not good with names, species etc. I can see that it does not look like the plant in you pic. I am however wondering if the leaves on my plant are soft and delicate because the plant is very young and just a sapling! Unsure. Thanks for your interest and suggestions. Chamol

Hi Silver Surfer. Just wondering if the appearance of the leaves will change as the plant gets older? It's very young. Unsure. Thanks for your interest. Chamol

Yep..looks like some sort of willow for me too. willow seeds do get blown all over the place by the wind..some will 'fly' great distances. When some willows release their seeds the air can be full of them...like white fluffy cloud.

I think salix have catkins - not sure if that's some, most or all varieties. Also don't know if they have to reach a certain age/size before they produce them. Mine produced them the first year as I recall. I got it as a bare-rooted tree about a metre tall, perhaps a bit taller. Here's mine in March last year.
